ABOUT EMILY

We all live multi-storied lives. The stories that we tell ourselves and others shape who we are in our day-to-day lives. As a lifelong learner, listener, and storyteller, I am utilizing narrative therapy to help people understand their personal stories, separate themselves from their problem focused stories, and learn how to write new chapters.

Through a therapeutic relationship, I will honor your story so we can co-construct a brighter, healthier reality together. My narrative approach utilizes a trauma informed lens and incorporates techniques from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, person-centered therapy, internal family systems therapy, and cognitive based therapy. I am available for in-person sessions with adolescents, emerging adults, adults, and couples.

I am currently pursuing a Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Emory & Henry University in Emory, Virginia. During my graduate work, I am specializing in trauma-based therapeutic modalities, equine assisted psychotherapy, and grief counseling. I am also collaborating with other mental health professionals to explore interests relating to professional burnout, resilience, and social supports.

I came to Potter Counseling and Consulting with over 15 years of professional experience in the field of public health research and community-based health evaluation. I have a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Master of International Law and Human Rights from the United Nation’s University for Peace, and a Bachelor of Arts in History and International Studies from Davidson College. My specific areas of expertise are relating to evidence-based models of care, postpartum mental health, military mental health, and community-based crisis response.

I live in Durham, NC with my husband, Arch, three children, and an Australian Shepherd who keep me active and smiling. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking, and adventuring around North Carolina.
