Child & Adolescent Therapist Opening

Employment Type: W-2 Employee, Full-Time preferred; Part-Time considered

Compensation: Productivity-based W-2 compensation with tiered performance incentives (higher percentage payouts based on weekly session volume thresholds)

Location: Durham, North Carolina

Licensure: Fully or provisionally licensed in North Carolina

About the Position

Potter Counseling & Consulting is seeking a Child & Adolescent Therapist to join our Durham clinical team. We are looking for a clinician who enjoys working closely with children, adolescents, parents, and families and who values thoughtful, evidence-based, relational care.

Our practice is designed to give clinicians meaningful professional autonomy while providing comprehensive administrative infrastructure, steady referrals, peer consultation, and collegial support. We value excellent clinical work, healthy professional boundaries, continued professional growth, reliability, and a sustainable approach to outpatient therapy.

Caseload & Schedule

We strive to maintain sustainable clinical expectations that allow therapists to provide thoughtful, high-quality care while maintaining a consistent outpatient caseload.

  • Session Volume: For full-time clinicians, the general expectation is approximately 20 completed client sessions per week. Because cancellations and reschedules are a normal part of outpatient practice, clinicians typically schedule approximately 24 client appointments per week to maintain that average.

  • Weekly Availability: Full-time clinicians are generally expected to maintain approximately 28 hours of weekly availability for client appointments. This allows enough scheduling flexibility to accommodate client demand and normal attendance fluctuations while leaving dedicated time outside of client-facing hours for documentation, treatment planning, care coordination, and consultation.

  • Hours: Because children and adolescents are primarily available outside of school hours, this position requires regular late-afternoon and some early-evening availability. Within those clinical needs, we encourage clinicians to develop schedules that are sustainable for both the therapist and their clients.

Areas of Clinical Focus

Common areas of clinical focus within our practice include:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • OCD

  • Depression

  • ADHD and executive functioning difficulties

  • Behavioral and emotional regulation concerns

  • Trauma

  • Family and relational difficulties

  • Life transitions

  • Social-emotional development

Clinicians are encouraged to develop areas of specialization and pursue continuing education that strengthens their clinical work over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive clinical intakes, diagnostic assessments, and ongoing individual and family therapy at our Durham office.

  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on client needs, developmental level, family context, and treatment goals.

  • Utilize evidence-based approaches appropriate to the presenting concern (which may include CBT, TF-CBT, PCIT, ERP, ACT, DBT, and other clinically appropriate modalities).

  • Provide parent guidance, psycho-education, and behavioral consultation when appropriate to the client's treatment.

  • Collaborate with schools, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and other members of a client's care team when clinically appropriate and authorized.

  • Complete timely and compliant clinical documentation within the practice's Electronic Health Record.

  • Participate in clinical consultation, supervision, and professional development.

  • Maintain a consistent clinical schedule that supports client access and established caseload expectations.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, Psychology, or another qualifying mental health discipline from an accredited institution.

Licensure Current North Carolina license or associate/provisional license, including:

Clinical Experience

  • Preference for candidates with at least two years of direct clinical experience working with children and adolescents, including a strong foundation in child development and family systems.

Clinical Competencies

  • Sound clinical assessment and case conceptualization skills.

  • Familiarity with evidence-based treatment approaches.

  • Comfort using electronic documentation and telehealth systems.

W-2 Employment & Practice Support

  • Administrative Support: Our administrative team manages intake coordination, scheduling, billing, insurance credentialing, and fee collection—allowing clinicians to focus primarily on direct patient care.

  • Established Referral Network: Potter Counseling has established relationships with local pediatricians, schools, churches, community organizations, and former clients. These relationships, along with our practice marketing, support clinicians as they build and maintain their caseloads.

  • In-House Supervision Included: For eligible LCMHCA clinicians, fully covered clinical supervision toward North Carolina licensure is provided as part of employment.

  • W-2 Structure & Compensation: Clinicians are W-2 employees. Compensation is tied to clinical services provided, with clear opportunities for increased earning potential through our tiered performance structure.

  • Retirement Benefit: Eligible employees may participate in the practice's SIMPLE IRA retirement plan after meeting initial eligibility requirements, with matching employer contributions provided according to plan terms.

  • Professional Autonomy & Culture: Clinicians have significant autonomy in developing their clinical style and specializations. We maintain a supportive, relational environment where clinicians can consult with peers, grow professionally, and balance clinical work with a meaningful life outside of the office.

Faith & Psychological Integration

Potter Counseling & Consulting emphasizes the integration of faith and psychological practice when desired by the client. We serve individuals and families from a wide range of religious, spiritual, and nonreligious backgrounds.

When faith or spirituality is important to a client's treatment goals, we support the thoughtful incorporation of their beliefs and values with evidence-based psychological care. We welcome clinicians who value this integration and are comfortable providing culturally and spiritually responsive care across diverse perspectives. Clinicians are expected to approach these conversations with respect for each client's unique beliefs, values, autonomy, and treatment goals.
